Is the Divergent Trilogy Any Good?

I have read the Hunger Games, and fans of that are said to have liked the Divergent trilogy as well. I'm not sure whether I should read it: it sounds a bit like THG with the factions, but I doubt it is. I'm just not sure.

Any thoughts?

Not read it myself, but several people I know have read it and enjoyed it. Not high literature, but a good read.

There are a few similarities to the Hunger Games, such as the lead characters being female, age 16,and the catalyst that starts a war. But there are enough differences to it that you don't feel like you're reading THG all over again. It's able to stand on its own. The first two are great, third one not so much. But after you've read the first two, you have to finish it out. Or at least, I should say, I had to. I'd say check them out.

Like what Alicia said, there are similarities between the two. But they are different as well. I like the first 2 books, but not so keen on the third book either. But again, thats the problem with most trilogy, when you read one, you kind of needing to read it all.
I would encourage you to read it, without seeing the movie to start with.

Thanks, all! I've just ordered it online, and plan to start reading next week.

I'm old enough to be your Mom and I enjoyed Divergent when I read it a
couple of years ago. I also agree with Alicia that while the premise of THG
and the Divergent trilogy are similar, the writing style and stories are
definitely different from each other, and there can be no mistaking the two
for each other.

I've been meaning to reading the next two volumes but haven't found the
time to just sit back and read them cover to cover... I am almost tempted
to ask Ed_G to spend some of his Audible credits on them so that we could
listen together (I am sighted and read inkprint books and enjoy audio
books as well).

A quick peruse of Amazon dot co dot uk reveals that there are a few back
story type novellas that tie in with the Divergent series. I downloaded the
story about the character Four onto my Kindle for free and hope to be able
to read that some time soon.

As an avid reader of many genres, I have also read the Hunger Games. Heck, I even got through the Twilight saga, mainly because my wife and I red it together. I've also read the Divergent trilogy, and while it's uses some staples of the genre, it has enough personality to differentiate it from something like the Hunger Games. The faction system is interesting, even though I thought more could have been done with it. One thing Divergent doesn't have is a will-they-won't-they forced love triangle. But it DOES have forced relationship problems which could easily have been solved with less assuming and more communication. What can I say, plot points like that really bug me.:) All in all it's a worth-while series if you're in to that particular sub-genre. If nothing else, the faction system and its implications are rather thought-provoking.

B_G... you're braver than I in regards to that Toilet Saga... errmmmm, the
Twilight Saga series of books and films. Tried to read the first one but just
couldn't get into it and the first film bored me so much that I fell asleep
after about a half hour (I saw it on an airplane)... I ended up watching
Toilet Saga Breaking Wind part one because my sister in law wanted to go
and my brother refused, so she paid my way in on air miles points if I went
with her.

Another series that I thought was utter dreck was the Fifty Shades series.
I could barely make it through the first book, it was so horribly written,
that I didn't bother with the second or third book. I asked one of my
colleagues at work a few questions about what I thought happened in both
books and it turns out, I was pretty much spot on. Pretty bad writing, if
you ask me.

So yeah, while I know that the Divergent series is far from high brow
reading, for what it is, it isn't all that bad. I hope yo enjoy your new
acquisition.

Well true Kate, the toilet and the 50 shits of shades series are probably the only two trilogy that i can't be bother. Okay, i did scan through most of the trilogy, that is more of out of the curiosity than anything else.

Oh god... I read the Toilet series and, not being a conventional teenager, I thought it was... Crap. Yeah, one way to put it.

Thanks for your input :) I'm half-nervous and half-excited to read it now.

I read the hunger games and the divergent series. I hated the hunger games. I thought it was aweful and katnis was fucking annoying. But I did like divergent.

I read the first book, but some bastard told me all the spoilers so it's kind of ruined it for me.

I read the Hunger Games, Twilight series, and the Divergent trilogy. It's good! Twilight sucks socks. The third book, Aligiant, made me cry.

I barely made it through the first book of the Hunger Games trilogy and the Toilet Saga, but I enjoyed the Divergent trilogy.

I've red all three of these. I enjoyed the settings of both the Hunger Games and the Divergent series. Especially the divergent series had some interesting potential which I feel was under-utilized. I really appreciated how the Divergent series had no pointless love triangle, though like Twilight and the Hunger Games, I felt the female protagonists were quite rediculous in how they handled situations with the opposite sex. As for Twilight ... I actually didn't mind the take on vampires. Unconventional certainly, but it didn't bother me too much. I actually enjoyed various aspects of the lore, particularly in the last book, and some of the character back stories were interesting. But Bella is one of the worst characters I've ever read about, Edward - who is supposed to be dreamy and romantic I guess to teenage girls - just comes off creepy and far too idealistic, and the relationships portrayed made my brain bleed. I don't understand why it's so cool to hate it - especially now that we have 50 Shades of Pain, but some of that critisism is well-deserved. Has anyone red the Host by Stephanie Meyer though? That book made the pain of Twilight go away. Very interesting story and I'm sad she has not written its sequel yet.

I actually started reading The Host! Dude, it's good!

Post 17 by faithfulwolf (Veteran Zoner) on Wednesday, 22-Apr-2015 12:49:09

I've read everything mentioned except for Fifty Shades and the Host.
I liked the hunger games and the first two books of the Divergent trilogy. I pretty much hated the third book, but it was impossible not to read. They kind of reminded me of each other, but were different enough that I was glad I read both.
I tolerated the Twilight or toilet saga, but I read it before everyone went crazy for it.
I don't think I'll read fifty shades, it just sounds stupid to me and I've heard so many people hate it that I'm frankly scared to look.

But, the soundtrack for the movie is good. The book and the actual movie is so not great. :) Divergent is amazing!

Post 19 by battle star queen (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 28-Mar-2016 23:58:38

I've read all of these, except for fifty shades, which after watching not even half of the movie, I have no desire to. Whoever thought up that book, needs to take a good hard look at themselves.

I read somewhere fifty shades was based off a twilight fanfiction.

I don't know if it's true, seeing as the information came from wikipedia, but if it is true, that would explain the horrible writing.

If you have ever read fanfiction, you'll know that most of them are not only poorly written, they're also full of plotholes.

I read The Hunger Games only to see what the fuss was all about, and while I did enjoy the first 2 books, the third book not so much.

It was like reading about a completely different character.

I hate love triangles, especially when the author focuses on it constantly.

Hunger Games didn't appear to do it too much, not in the first two books at least.
